Specialist operations for the Google Cloud data tier

We design the organization, folder and project structure with Shared VPC, and manage Cloud SQL and AlloyDB for performance and cost together.

Reference architecture

Reference architecture on Google Cloud

Environments separated by organization policy and folders; the data tier uses regional HA and cross-region replicas for DR.

Example reference design on Google Cloud — the final design follows your business requirements, security policy and cost review.
  • Organization Policy and per-folder IAM inheritance
  • Data perimeters with Shared VPC and VPC Service Controls
  • Comparing Cloud SQL Enterprise and Enterprise Plus editions
  • SQL tuning with Query Insights

MSP scope

MSP scope on Google Cloud

Representative services we use in each area, adjusted to your environment and contract scope.

Architecture design

Account, network and identity structure (landing zone) with multi-zone redundancy as the default.

  • Resource hierarchy (Organization · Folders · Projects)
  • Shared VPC · Cloud Interconnect
  • Enterprise foundations (landing zone)
  • Google Cloud Well-Architected Framework

Migration to cloud

Step-by-step moves, from server rehosting to managed database replatforming.

  • Migrate to Virtual Machines
  • Database Migration Service
  • DMS conversion workspaces (Oracle · SQL Server → PostgreSQL)
  • Storage Transfer Service

24x7 monitoring & operations

Metrics, logs and events collected and run through incident and change processes.

  • Cloud Monitoring
  • Cloud Logging
  • Personalized Service Health
  • OS Config · VM Manager

Cost optimization (FinOps)

Visibility, budget alerts, right-sizing and commitment reviews on a recurring cycle.

  • Cloud Billing reports · budgets
  • Billing export to BigQuery
  • Active Assist recommendations
  • Committed use discounts

Security & compliance

Least privilege, encryption, audit logging and security-recommendation reviews by default.

  • Cloud IAM · Organization Policy
  • Security Command Center
  • VPC Service Controls
  • Cloud KMS · Secret Manager

Backup & DR

Backup policies and recovery objectives (RPO/RTO), proven by restore drills.

  • Backup and DR Service
  • Cloud SQL / AlloyDB cross-region replicas
  • Multi-region Cloud Storage
  • Persistent Disk snapshots

Managed database operations

DBA-level care for parameters, performance and the version lifecycle of managed databases.

  • Cloud SQL for MySQL · PostgreSQL
  • AlloyDB for PostgreSQL
  • Query Insights
  • Cloud SQL Enterprise Plus edition

IaC & automation

Infrastructure as code, with deployments and routine checks automated in pipelines.

  • Terraform
  • Infrastructure Manager
  • Cloud Build
  • Config Connector

Managed databases

Choosing a managed database on Google Cloud

For each open-source engine: the managed service available on this cloud, or the self-managed alternative.

Managed database services by engine on Google Cloud
EngineManaged service / alternativeNotes
MySQLCloud SQL for MySQLManaged service available — we manage parameters, performance and upgrade plans
PostgreSQLCloud SQL for PostgreSQL / AlloyDB for PostgreSQLManaged service available — we manage parameters, performance and upgrade plans
MariaDBCompute Engine · GKE (self-managed)No managed service — self-managed on VMs/containers (linked to our open-source DB services)
InfluxDBCompute Engine · GKE (self-managed)No managed service — self-managed on VMs/containers (linked to our open-source DB services)
Oracle · SQL ServerDMS conversion → Cloud SQL / AlloyDB for PostgreSQLUsually the source of a heterogeneous migration — see Data Migration
Database Migration Service supports heterogeneous migrations from Oracle and SQL Server to Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL and AlloyDB (conversion workspaces, including Gemini-assisted conversion). Check supported versions and limits in the official docs.

Migration to cloud

Migrating to Google Cloud

  1. Assess

Inventory servers and databases, map dependencies, baseline performance, review licensing and choose rehost, replatform or refactor.

  2. Landing zone

Build account, network, identity and logging standards first, as code.

  3. Migrate

We start from Migrate to Virtual Machines for servers and Database Migration Service (full dump + CDC) for databases, with DMS conversion workspaces · ora2pg for schema conversion.

  4. Validate & cut over

Verify data consistency and performance, switch over against agreed criteria and keep a rollback path.

  5. Stabilize & optimize

Heightened monitoring during hypercare, then cost and performance optimization as routine operations.

Security & compliance

Korean regulatory & security considerations

  • Region: asia-northeast3 (Seoul) — document where data and backup copies are stored
  • Access control, encryption and access-log retention designed with the Personal Information Protection Act and ISMS-P in mind
  • Public sector: confirm whether CSAP (Cloud Security Assurance Program) applies and which certification scope is required
  • Operating procedures that keep audit logs, change history and access reviews as evidence
These are general considerations. OpenDB Works does not act as a certification agent or guarantee certification; interpretation of requirements rests with your security team and the certification body.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

AlloyDB or Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL?

We compare analytical query share, performance needs, cost and operational features in a PoC. We do not recommend one product across the board.

Is there a managed MariaDB?

Google Cloud has no managed MariaDB service. We build it on Compute Engine or GKE, or evaluate a move to Cloud SQL for MySQL.

Are you a Google Cloud partner?

We do not publish partner status on this site; we can share it during consultation if relevant.

Shall we start by reviewing your cloud and databases as they are today?

Tell us your clouds, database versions, topology and concerns, and we will propose an assessment scope and approach.
