AWS operations, accountable down to the database

From a Control Tower account structure to RDS and Aurora performance tuning, one team designs and runs both infrastructure and databases.

Reference architecture

Reference architecture on AWS

Accounts separated with AWS Organizations and Control Tower; the data tier runs Multi-AZ with backup policies by default.

Example reference design on AWS — the final design follows your business requirements, security policy and cost review.
  • Separate production, development and security accounts with SCP guardrails
  • Multi-AZ placement and Aurora/RDS read replicas
  • Regular reviews against the Well-Architected Framework
  • Database metrics (Performance Insights, Database Insights) in the same dashboards as infrastructure

MSP scope

MSP scope on AWS

Representative services we use in each area, adjusted to your environment and contract scope.

Architecture design

Account, network and identity structure (landing zone) with multi-zone redundancy as the default.

  • AWS Organizations
  • AWS Control Tower
  • Amazon VPC · Transit Gateway
  • AWS Well-Architected Framework

Migration to cloud

Step-by-step moves, from server rehosting to managed database replatforming.

  • AWS Application Migration Service
  • AWS DMS · DMS Schema Conversion
  • AWS Schema Conversion Tool (SCT)
  • AWS DataSync

24x7 monitoring & operations

Metrics, logs and events collected and run through incident and change processes.

  • Amazon CloudWatch
  • AWS Systems Manager
  • AWS Health
  • Amazon EventBridge

Cost optimization (FinOps)

Visibility, budget alerts, right-sizing and commitment reviews on a recurring cycle.

  • AWS Cost Explorer
  • AWS Budgets
  • AWS Compute Optimizer
  • Savings Plans · Reserved Instances

Security & compliance

Least privilege, encryption, audit logging and security-recommendation reviews by default.

  • AWS IAM Identity Center
  • AWS Security Hub
  • Amazon GuardDuty
  • AWS Config · AWS KMS

Backup & DR

Backup policies and recovery objectives (RPO/RTO), proven by restore drills.

  • AWS Backup
  • AWS Elastic Disaster Recovery
  • Aurora Global Database
  • Amazon S3 versioning · replication

Managed database operations

DBA-level care for parameters, performance and the version lifecycle of managed databases.

  • Amazon RDS (MySQL · PostgreSQL · MariaDB)
  • Amazon Aurora (MySQL · PostgreSQL)
  • Amazon Timestream for InfluxDB
  • RDS Performance Insights · CloudWatch Database Insights

IaC & automation

Infrastructure as code, with deployments and routine checks automated in pipelines.

  • Terraform
  • AWS CloudFormation
  • AWS CDK
  • GitHub Actions · CodePipeline

Managed databases

Choosing a managed database on AWS

For each open-source engine: the managed service available on this cloud, or the self-managed alternative.

Managed database services by engine on AWS
EngineManaged service / alternativeNotes
MySQLAmazon RDS for MySQL / Aurora MySQLManaged service available — we manage parameters, performance and upgrade plans
PostgreSQLAmazon RDS for PostgreSQL / Aurora PostgreSQLManaged service available — we manage parameters, performance and upgrade plans
MariaDBAmazon RDS for MariaDBManaged service available — we manage parameters, performance and upgrade plans
InfluxDBAmazon Timestream for InfluxDBManaged InfluxDB — confirm supported versions and features in the official docs
Oracle · SQL ServerAmazon RDS for Oracle / SQL Server (or EC2)Usually the source of a heterogeneous migration — see Data Migration
We choose between Aurora and RDS by comparing workload, cost and operating model. Engine end-of-support dates from AWS announcements feed the upgrade plan.

Migration to cloud

Migrating to AWS

  1. Assess

Inventory servers and databases, map dependencies, baseline performance, review licensing and choose rehost, replatform or refactor.

  2. Landing zone

Build account, network, identity and logging standards first, as code.

  3. Migrate

We start from AWS Application Migration Service for servers and AWS DMS (full load + CDC) for databases, with DMS Schema Conversion · AWS SCT · ora2pg for schema conversion.

  4. Validate & cut over

Verify data consistency and performance, switch over against agreed criteria and keep a rollback path.

  5. Stabilize & optimize

Heightened monitoring during hypercare, then cost and performance optimization as routine operations.

Security & compliance

Korean regulatory & security considerations

  • Region: Asia Pacific (Seoul) · ap-northeast-2 — document where data and backup copies are stored
  • Access control, encryption and access-log retention designed with the Personal Information Protection Act and ISMS-P in mind
  • Public sector: confirm whether CSAP (Cloud Security Assurance Program) applies and which certification scope is required
  • Operating procedures that keep audit logs, change history and access reviews as evidence
These are general considerations. OpenDB Works does not act as a certification agent or guarantee certification; interpretation of requirements rests with your security team and the certification body.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do you hold an AWS partner tier?

We do not publish partner tiers or certifications on this site. If relevant, we share the current status during consultation.

Can you move Oracle to Aurora PostgreSQL?

Yes. We assess conversion scope with DMS Schema Conversion, AWS SCT and ora2pg, and reduce downtime with DMS full load plus CDC. See Data Migration for the full process.

Can you take over an existing AWS account?

Yes. We start with an assessment (permissions, cost, backup and monitoring gaps), agree an improvement plan and operating scope, then take over.

Shall we start by reviewing your cloud and databases as they are today?

Tell us your clouds, database versions, topology and concerns, and we will propose an assessment scope and approach.
